Commerce Street

"Established in 1752, Smithfield has watched the evolution of commerce change its character. Down the hill from Main Street lies Commerce Street, where much of the city's business was transacted by the Pagan River in the 18th and 19th centuries. Trading ships stopped there to exchange goods for tobacco, peanuts and the delectable Smithfield hams. Most of the warehouses were destroyed in a devastating fire along Commerce Street in the 1920s that threatened the elegant houses on the crest of the hill." (Nicholson).
